What is ‘Dry Burn?’

Dry burn is a process used by some vaping enthusiasts to clean the atomizer of residual gunk that is sometimes left behind in between cleanings. By using the device’s battery, the residue is essentially burned off. Some vapers swear by it. Others despise it. Without getting too technical, here is a short list of the Pros and Cons.

  • The dry burn process can be really helpful in ridding your atomizer of those larger chunks of debris, like caramel or cinnamon bits. Of course, we could simply chose to buy a lighter blend of e-juice, but why should we? That’s the fun of vaping, having unlimited choices.
  • The dry burn process is fast and easy. Instead of spending a long time soaking and drying the atty, just dry burn for a couple of minutes, rinse, and use.
  • No alcohol or other chemicals is needed, which can come in handy if PGA is not available in your region. In the absence of PGA, some vapers use vodka or some other form of flavorless spirit. But these can often be a bit expensive.

  • Dry burning can reduce the lifespan of your atomizer considerably. The resistor coil will begin to wear out much faster, getting thinner and thinner with each clean. A thinner coil means less electrical current is getting to the e-juice and much less heat is being produced. Eventually, the coil becomes too thin and snaps.
  • Overburning is also a concern, which can lead to your coil snapping instantly while the vape pen is still in your hand. Soaking the coil in PGA overnight will still remove those larger pieces of residue, but it’s not as instantaneous as dry burning.
  • Yes, dry burning gives you a cleaner coil within minutes, but what’s so tough about dropping your atty into a glass of PGA or ultrasonic cleaner right before bedtime? Why go through all the extra work of a dry burn when PGA provides the same results?
  • The dry burn process can actually be a bit smelly. This may not be a deal-breaker for some vapers, but the odor of burning residue can definitely be rather harsh.

Consider the options. Some vapers dry burn all the time, every day. Others avoid it at all costs. And still others resort to dry burning only in special circumstance where time is an issue and they don’t want to wait overnight for the PGA soaking process to be complete. There are some ultrasonic jewelry cleaners that can clean your atty in about 5-minutes. Dry burning can work in a pinch, but newbies probably shouldn’t rely solely on this method until they are more familiar with their vaping devices.
