Vaping 101: Why do e-liquids have different PG/VG ratios?

Many newbie vapers often wonder why e-liquids contain different combinations of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). To answer this question, we should first define what these substances are and what role they play in e-juice manufacturing.

Propylene glycol is a colorless, odorless liquid with a very watery texture. It is safe for humans to consume and can be found in many of our standard grocery products. Toothpastes, ice creams, baked goods, cake mixes, and frostings are common examples. Regarding e-liquids, it’s the PG that keeps the other ingredients like flavorings and liquid nicotine concentrates evenly dispersed throughout the entire bottle.

On the other hand, vegetable glycerin has a slightly sweet taste and is also nearly odorless. Because it is made from vegetables, VG is also safe to consume. Common grocery products containing vegetable glycerin include mustards, vinegars, margarines and other butter substitutes, and even pet food. It’s creamy, syrupy texture gives your vape juice it’s bulk.

Different PG/VG ratios produce different vaping experiences.

When newbie vapers first beginning shopping for vape juice, they might come across several brands that offer multiple different PG/VG ratios. For example, a single brand can be manufactured with a 50/50, 80/20, or 40/60 ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerin. The type that you choose may depend on individual vaping preferences.

  • High PG content gives a harsher throat hit. The “throat hit” is that punch to the back of the throat commonly associated with smoking tobacco cigarettes. When newbie vapers first transition to vaping, many are often surprised that the vaping experience is quite different than smoking. Before you relapse back into smoking, try increasing the percentage of the propylene glycol in your e-liquid for a harsher throat hit that mimics that of smoking..
  • High VG produces more robust cloud production. For many vapers, vaping is simply not enjoyable unless they can blow huge plumes of vapor clear across the room. In fact, many vaping expos hold contests surrounding this very idea. They call the practice “cloud chasing.” If you want bigger clouds, increase the VG content in your e-liquid.
  • Use High VG content for a smoother, more flavorful vaping experience. Many newbie vapers are often disenchanted after ordering a new brand of e-liquid that sounds like it would taste absolutely terrific. After they load it up in their vape mod, they discover that the flavor combinations appear muted or somewhat bland. Next time, consider buying a version with a higher VG content for a smoother, more flavorful vaping experience.

There are lots of different reasons why your e-liquids may not taste as wonderful as you had hoped. The PG/VG rations is one reason. Another might be the temperature settings that you are using with your vape mod. Don’t be afraid to experiment, but be care not to crank up the heat too high. Higher temperatures can lead to dry hits, which can take all the joy out of vaping very quickly.
