Donald Trump has been making a lot of national leaders very angry since taking office on January 20. In just two short weeks, he has managed to incite a hang-up phone call with Australia, cause the Mexican President to cut short his plans for a visit to Washington, DC, and instructed the government of Iran that they are officially “on notice.” While his surge of tweets and executive orders make for interesting news fodder, what happens to vaping if the new POTUS pisses off China?
Some might say that The Donald already has. Just moments after Election Day 2016 when the world was still reacting to the surprise GOP victory, Trump either intentionally or accidentally took a phone call from the leader of Taiwan. This action instantly infuriated the Chinese government which has had a One China Policy since 1979. No U.S. president since has directly communicated with a sitting Taiwanese President without first going through China – until Trump.
"There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China. These are facts recognized by the international community and no one can change this."
-CNN Transcript of response by Lu Kang, spokesperson for the Chinese government
Instead of apologizing for breaking decades of presidential tradition, Trump responded by stating that a One China Policy is now “negotiable.” While many of his supporters love to hear this sort of tough talk, others in the vaping community are beginning to worry.
Will Trump implement a 45 percent tariff on China?
If Trump initiates a trade war with China, as he has insinuated time and time again, then his threatened placement of a 45 percent tariff on all Chinese imports to the United States may cause vapers to experience an immediate and massive price hike in vaping technology. China just happens to produce and export the largest percentage of vape mods, pens, and gadgetry to nations around the world – including the United States.
But it’s not just vaping gear that will be threatened. The Wall Street Journal also suggests that other areas of technology will also be affected. For example, several components of the Apple iPhone are manufactured in China, too. A 45 percent tariff would probably send iPhone costs spiraling as a result.
Will Trump repeal the FDA deeming regulations?
Still, American vapers remain hopeful that the Trump Administration will eventually repeal the FDA deeming regulations that threaten to wipe out the American vaping industry within the next 18-months. But Trump has his hands full at the moment, and he is creating new controversies seemingly every day.
Be careful, Mr. Trump. While the vaping community supports you, we really don’t want you to piss off China – too much. Repealing the FDA deeming regulations may give us cheap e-liquid, but pissing off China might cause the prices of our vape mods to soar!
