Just this week, an anti-vaping activist group uploaded a website falsely claiming that enjoying a single Juul pod is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes. This abhorrent anti-vaping propaganda is intentionally sending a clear and vile message, particularly to America’s youth, that vaping is just as deadly as smoking. This assertion is completely untrue, and the UK’s Public Health England (PHE) wants everyone to know.
In a rather disturbing video, scientists and public health experts Dr. Rosemary Leonard and Dr. Lion Shahab perform an experiment demonstrating the varying negative effects of vaping vs. smoking. Using three simple bell jars filled with cotton balls, the researchers proceed to pump the smoke of a combustible cigarette into the first jar. The second is then filled with the vapor from an electronic cigarette. The third is pumped with normal, room-temperature air.
Smoking vs. vaping: The results of the Public Health England experiment
What results is unnervingly difficult to watch. The cotton balls in the first jar - meant to represent the lungs and respiratory system of a typical daily smoker - become saturated with a thick, gooey, tar-like substance that even sticks to the sides of the jar and the pump-tube itself. Meanwhile, the cotton balls of the third jar representing the comparable results for a typical non-smoker, non-vaper, remain as pure and snowy-white as the day they were manufactured.
How did the vapers' jar compare? Only a slight tinge of discoloration appears, and even then, it is somewhat difficult to detect. PHE officials simultaneously issued a press release blasting anti-vaping groups’ like The Truth, the aforementioned website with the Juul-inspired falsehood.
“It would be tragic if thousands of smokers who could quit with the help of an e-cigarette are being put off due to false fears about safety. We need to reassure smokers that switching to an e-cigarette would be much less harmful than smoking. This demonstration highlights the devastating harms caused by every cigarette and helps people see that vaping is likely to pose only a fraction of the risk.”

Unlike the United States and its public health organization the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the UK government and its comparable agency Public Health England are taking an aggressively pro-vaping stance. The PHE doesn’t pull any punches. It fully endorses vaping as a safer and healthier alternative to smoking. Period.
The recently released PHE film is part of a nationwide Health Harms Reduction campaign designed to educate the British citizens about the health benefits of electronic cigarettes. In Great Britain, current statistics indicate that an astonishing 44 percent mistakenly believe that vaping is just as dangerous to one’s health as smoking.
The Brit’s PHE organization is fighting back with the release of its disturbing video. It’s not only attracting a great deal of attention in England but around their world as the film goes viral on social media – because what teenager doesn’t love watching gross stuff on YouTube, right?
Well done, PHE. Well done!
