Vaping improves myocardial heart functions, say scientists

Public health officials often claim that more research is needed before they can officially endorse vaping as an effective smoking cessation tool. However, there are already volumes of scientific data documenting the many health benefits of vaping compared to smoking. One such study out of Greece shows that by switching to electronic cigarettes, smokers can vastly improve myocardial heart functions almost immediately.

Led by world-class cardiologist Dr. Konstantinos E Farsalinos from the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Kallithéa, the study is entitled Acute effects of using an electronic nicotine-delivery device (electronic cigarette) on myocardial function: comparison with the effects of regular cigarettes. Overview of the Farsalinos vaping study

The Farsalinos team began their research by monitoring numerous heart functions of some 76 volunteers. 40 were active, daily vapers and the other 36 were active smokers. Their ages ranged from 31 to 40 years old, and the smokers admitted to smoking at least 15 cigarettes per day. The vaping group consisted of only former smokers who maintained a history of daily vaping for at least 30-days consecutively. Myocardial functions monitored included the following.

  • Myocardial performance index
  • Heart Rate
  • Diastolic Blood Pressure
  • Systolic Blood Pressure
  • Left Ventricle (LV) Diameter
  • Left Ventricle (LV) Mass Index
  • Glucose Levels
  • Triglyceride Levels
  • Cholesterol Levels
  • IVRT Corrected to Heart Rate (IVRTc)
  • Isovolumetric Relaxation Time (IVRT)
  • And many others

Throughout the course of the study, the scientists invited the 76 participants to their laboratory where these numerous biomarkers were measured both before and after a regular session of either smoking or vaping in a controlled environment. Smokers were sent to a different room than the vapers to avoid possible cross-contamination. Each smoker was given the same brand of tobacco cigarette purchased form a local vendor while the vapers each enjoyed the same e-liquid with an 11ml nicotine concentration.

"This is the first study to examine the acute effects of electronic cigarette use on myocardial function. No adverse effects on LV [left ventricular] myocardial function were observed after using electronic cigarette with nicotine-containing liquid for 7 minutes. On the contrary, significant changes in diastolic function parameters were found after smoking 1 tobacco cigarette."

"This study provides the first clinical evidence that electronic cigarettes have less acute adverse effects on myocardial function when compared to tobacco cigarettes."

What the scientists discovered is that the vaping group experienced no measurable adverse effects in myocardial functions. Meanwhile, the smokers exhibited almost immediate negative effects to the heart, including those related to oxidative stress, myocardial inflammation, and other forms of tissue and arterial damage.
