Teen Vaping: Take a Stand

Posted by

The vaping community has been taking a big hit in the media lately. We are under a constant threat of government regulation while also having to fight off false information being spread by Big Tobacco that vaping is “harmful to your health”. Even though there are millions of people publically praising vape pens and e-cigs as a safe and easy way to quit smoking, adults are always free to make their own choices. But with teens now experimenting with these products in greater numbers, the vaping community has become an even larger lightening rod for controversy.

Why are teens so attracted to vaping?

Since the dawn of time, teenagers have always had to battle peer pressure. If “the cool kids” are doing it, then everyone else seems to want to do it, too. Whether it’s vaping, having sex, or buying a car, teens are always looking for a way to break the rules in order to prove their maturity. And with such tasty-sounding names for e-juice flavors like “Grape Ape” or “Bloody Knuckles” offered in such vibrantly colored packaging, no wonder teenagers are drawn to vaping. While most adults would prefer their teenagers pick up a vape pen rather than a Marlboro, vaping is still “For Adults Only.”

What can you do?

As vape shops begin to open all over the country, we are beginning to see a massive increase in visibility of our vaping subculture. We have vaping contests called Cloud Chasing that are drawing huge crowds in rather expansive public venues. And we are seeing more and more vape shops popping up all over the place, even in local shopping malls. Vapers are very passionate about their e-juices and vape pens, and we tend to look at vaping as a sort of fun hobby to share with our groups of friends. That’s great. Just look over your shoulder every now and then to make sure your teenagers aren’t within earshot (or eyesight).

There is some good news though. Current statistics show those teens who experiment with vape pens and e-cigs rarely, if ever, make the leap to tobacco cigarettes. And lots of teens are making the switch in the other direction, turning from smoking and chewing tobacco to vaping instead. Take a stand against teen vaping. It’s good for our kids and good for our community.
