Scrabble makes ‘vape’ official

Scrabble officially recognizes 'vape' as a word

Makers of the board game Scrabble have just added lots of new words to their official dictionary, and “vape” made the list. For those who haven’t played this game in a while, opponents can challenge a word that is spelled by another player with the tiny square letters. If the word does not appear in the Collins Scrabble Word List, then the player is forced to forfeit his or her turn. For Scrabble Geeks around the world, the inclusion of new words makes the game just that much more interesting.

Many of the updates include Internet slang and other words made popular in pop culture. Here is a short list of some of the more intriguing entries:

  • Vape
  • Twerking
  • Lotsa
  • Newb
  • Thanx
  • Cazh (short for “casual”)
  • Ridic (short for “ridiculous”)
  • Obvs (short for “obvious”)
  • Hacktwist
  • Eew
  • Grr

Scrabble has even included the word “cakehole,” as in “Shut your cakehole, you silly grunt!” For a game that has been around since 1949, this is pretty progressive stuff. The updated list includes over 6,500 new words, and “vape” made the cut.

The Fox News Channel in New York even featured this story on their online blog today, May 21, 2015. This is perhaps the most conservative of all news organizations, and even they are taking notice. As vaping continues to make the headlines, we are beginning to see vape pens and e-cigs in the most unusually places. From The Simpsons cartoon show (again on Fox) to a shot of Seinfeld Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus smoking an e-cig at the Golden Globes, vaping is beginning to gain a massive following.

Then we have the Netflix hit series House of Cards. Just this season, Kevin Spacey’s lead character has made the switch from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigs in a particularly memorable scene. The story line of the episode shows both Spacey and his wife deciding to quit smoking. Late one night, the wife walks in on Spacey vaping away in his living room. “You’re cheating,” screams his wife. To which Spacey replies, “No I’m not. It’s Vapor.”

David Letterman even shared a vape with TV and movie Star Katherine Heigl. Letterman, a long-time lover of cigars, is heard clearly stating, “This is remarkable” so that the entire viewing audience could hear him. Even Jimmy Kimmel has gotten into the vaping act. In one monologue recently, he jokes that Apple is in the final stages of inventing a new iPhone that doubles as a vape pen. All of this positive press is great for the vaping industry. If mainstream Hollywood is embracing vaping, then the American public is almost sure to follow.
