Safety Tips: Removable Batteries

Posted by

Many of the most popular regulated mods come with removable batteries, including brands like the Sigelei and SMOK brands. They usually come with a rather long, cylindrical 18650 battery that is usually more economical than the disposable varieties. However, thousands of accidents are reported each year as vaping becomes increasingly more widely accepted. Poor quality construction and mishandling of the mods by vapers themselves is often the likely culprit. Even though the manufacturer might market these devices as 100% safe, no electronic device of any kind can truthfully make this claim. Here are some important safety tips that can protect both you and the lifespan of your vaping mods.

  • The fundamental rule of removable battery safety is to never exceed the recommended amperage of the battery. Doing so can lead to devices catching on fire or other safety hazards.
  • Read the owner’s manual to determine the manner in which the mod charges. Some box mods, for example, provide USB pass-through charging, meaning that the user can charge and vape simultaneously. Others only use the USB connection solely for hardware updates. In these cases, recharging of the batteries needs to take place externally once the batteries are completely removed from the device.
  • Use the proper batteries. It’s a great deal of fun to experiment with our mods and to try new products, but make sure to read the owner’s manual to determine the recommended battery options for your particular mod. Most brands will recommend either an ICR, a LiPo, or an IMR. Deviating from the manufacturers’ suggestions can be catastrophic, especially for the beginning vaper.
  • Never combine different types of batteries in the same device at the same time. This builds on the previous safety tip above.
  • Never charge your batteries overnight, and never leave them unattended when charging.
  • Charge the removable batteries on the lowest possible setting to save undue stress on the battery and to maintain the lifespan of your mod.
  • As soon as the battery reaches a full charge, remove them from the charging mechanism to reduce the risk of permanent battery damage or even failure.

We also recommend to only purchase new batteries from an authorized dealer. We all like to find cost-saving alternatives, but it rarely pays to cut corners on something as critically important as the battery of your vaping device. Avoid buying batteries from places like EBay, for example. These sites are simply filled with fakes and frauds.
