Safety Precautions for e-Liquid and Vaping

Posted

E-cigs may look like neat little gadgets, but remember. They are not a toy! The e-liquid in our vaping devices can be deadly if ingested, especially for children and our cherished family pets. There are a number of health and safety concerns involving our vaping devices, and here is a short list of the more important hazards that we should all be aware of, especially for those of us who are new to vaping.

1.E-Liquid is Toxic.

Those little bottles of vaping liquid are actually poisonous. Be very careful where you store them. Avoid leaving them in your car where they can be easily found by children and pets. In fact, keep your e-cigarettes and any device that uses vaping liquids completely out of their reach. Many of the labels of these liquids have very yummy names like "grape ape" or “kiwi kush” and can therefore be a magnet for young children. They also very often include some very delicious-looking images on the bottles as well. Your children might mistake these vaping bottles for a tasty treat instead of what they actually are, a highly toxic, potentially deadly poison. Keep the phone number for the National Capital Poison Center handy at all times. 1-800-222-1222 will get you in touch with every local poison center in the entire United States.

2.Store your batteries and chargers in a safe place.

The chargers, ecig batteries, and plugs used for our e-vaping devices can also be very harmful. Children love to put anything they find in their mouths, and our family pooch, Fido, is probably going to think that you gave him a new toy to play with. So keep these items out of sight, especially when inside your vehicle. Using our e-cigs while driving is perfectly fine and legally acceptable, but refrain from changing the battery or refilling the liquid while operating the vehicle. If the charger is plugged into a low outlet in the dashboard or near the floor of our homes, this can be a huge safety hazard as well. Children can easily pull the plug out of the socket and place it in their mouths. This can cause shocks and even burns. The longer cords can also be easily wrapped around the small necks of our children and pets. Keep all of your vaping paraphernalia out of reach and on higher ground at all times.

3.Beware of Self-Modifications

Many users of vaping devices like to experiment by tweaking the atomizer or adding more power through the batteries to make them last longer. But be very, very careful. These types of self-modifications can actually cause disastrous consequences, not only to your children and pets, but to yourself as well. Every e-cigarette is specifically designed by its manufacturer to use the battery and charger that they came with. When we try to modify these on our own, we could actually cause the device to heat up more quickly or to a higher temperature than it really should. This could cause the e-cigs to melt in our hands, the batteries to explode, or worse.
