Donald Trump, Ron Johnson, and the FDA e-cig regulations: A disaster waiting to happen

Posted by

As Donald Trump heads into the Republican National Convention, hoping to secure the nomination for President of the United States, many retailers and advocacy groups are worried about another political race in Wisconsin that might do irreparable harm to the vaping industry. Senator Ron Johnson, the Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, is also up for re-election this year. And his chances are looking pretty bleak at the moment, largely due to the polarizing effect of a possible Trump candidacy.

Johnson is the U.S. senator that has been sending all those letters to the FDA regarding the recently announced deeming regulations that took the vaping industry by surprise on May 5, 2016. And like Trump, he is a Republican. But because Trump is so controversial, there are rumblings that a large portion of the Republican delegates are secretly trying to revolt, perhaps attempting to nominate someone like Ted Cruz instead. Even if this does not happen, most political insiders agree that the Republican Party is in trouble this year.

Donald Trump, Ron Johnson, and 911

If Trump continues to suffer from “foot-in-mouth disease,” making statements about Muslim bans and posting anti-sematic imagery on his Twitter account, then many Republicans worry that the typical American voter will carry their level of discontent down-ticket to other races, like those for Governors, House Representatives, and State Senators. And when the political pollsters review all of the possible Republican races nationwide, Sen. Ron Johnson is usually at the top of the list for being the most vulnerable to lose in a Clinton Landslide.

Even if a delegate revolt were to occur at the convention next week, Ron Johnson may still be at risk if the American People continue to view the Republican Party as “broken” or “divided.” To further illustrate just how devastating Trump has already been to Johnson’s re-election campaign, the senator has recently likened his chances of winning to the events of 911.

“It may not be life or death, like the vote the passengers on United Flight 93 took, but boy is it consequential.” – Sen. Ron Johnson

As far as the vaping industry is concerned, Sen. Ron Johnson is one of our favorite politicians. We would hate to see him lose in November, but we also fear his possible Democratic replacement. Russ Feingold seems like a nice enough guy, but no one really knows where he stands of the FDA e-cig regulations. And if history is any indication, Democrats rarely side with the vaping industry, except in very rare cases. After all, it was the Obama-appointed Mitch Zeller who created the FDA e-cig regulations in the first place.
