'Cloud Chasing' and Competitive Vaping

Posted by

E-cigs began gaining in popularity about eight years ago, and vaping wasn’t far behind. Now some vapers are taking the practice into an entirely new direction. The WallStreet Journal recently ran a report on “cloud chasing,” a new form of competitive vaping that is drawing worldwide attention, both negative and positive, to the vaping community.

How it Works

Think of cloud chasing as a type of extreme sport for vapers. In vaping lounges around the world, contests are being sponsored where competitors can win cash prizes, free vaping paraphernalia, and of course certain levels of respect by other competitive vapers. The goal is to inhale as much vapor as possible, and then exhale the longest cloud of smoke that is then measured by a panel of judges. In the WSJ article, one winner puffs a cloud some six feet in length while the crowd of onlookers, called “cloud gazers,” cheer and applaud his skills.

Some contests are won based on the formation and shape of the cloud itself. Cumulonimbus clouds receive higher scores than the cirrus formations. As one contestant of the World Series of Vape in Las Vegas noted, “It takes skill to be able to keep a ball of vapor together without dissipating.” Another young man stated that it takes lots of practice and patience to develop this talent.

Corporate Sponsorships

Apparently, this extreme sport of vaping is gaining drawing huge crowds of fans. In fact, those competitive Cloud Chasers who tend to win a lot of contests are even winning corporate sponsorships. In return for wearing the company logo on a tee shirt and ball cap while using a company-manufactured vaping device during the contest, the contestant can receive free vaping supplies, travel expenses to national contests, and even a monthly stipend…as long as they keep winning.

But Cloud Chasing is not for the faint of heart. Cloud Chasing requires the inhaling of a great deal of e-juice vapor while holding it in the lungs for a much longer time frame. So newbies beware. This is not a sport for the inexperienced. But Cloud Chasing is turning into a very creative marketing strategy to promote this healthier and safer alternative to smoking those harsh tobacco cigarettes.
