4 warning signs that your teenager is vaping

Posted by

In the good old days before the vaping craze hit, parents of rebellious teenagers could tell if their kid was smoking cigarettes simply by taking a whiff of their clothes. But today? It’s much more difficult. After all, vaping devices won’t leave the bedrooms of teenagers filled with odorous smoke and dirty ashtrays. If parents don’t vape, then they have no idea what to look for. Here are 4 warning signs that your teen may be secretly vaping.

1.  “Pens” that aren’t really pens

Teens are always bringing home new technological gadgetry, but pay closer attention. If a cylindrical device accidently drops out of little Bobby’s or Susie’s backpack, take a closer look. While your kids may tell you that it is simply a very thick ballpoint pen, it might truly be a vaping device. If there are holes located at either end of the tubular object, it is likely a vaping pen. Also, “box mods” are a new trend these days. These metal boxes look similar in size and shape to a large pack of cigarettes.

2.  Sweet scents

Instead of nasty tobacco smoke, you might begin to smell bubble gum or candy flavored scents wafting through the room…and your teenager has nothing in his or her mouth at the time. Don’t worry. You’re not imagining things. This sweet-smelling aroma may be the after-effects of cloud vaper. Vaping e-juices come in nearly any flavor combination imaginable. And teens tend to prefer the sweeter stuff.

3.  Drinking more water or juice

One of the side-effects of vaping is dry mouth. A primary ingredient in all e-juices is propylene glycol, which sucks the water molecules from the oral and nasal cavities. If your kid is drinking and sipping water or juice more frequently, you may have a vaping teenager on your hands. Additionally, the water-holding properties of e-juices can dry out the sinuses, possibly leading to frequent nosebleeds in teens that vape heavily.

4.  Avoidance of caffeinated beverages

Vaping can lead to a sensitivity to caffeine. Unconsciously, we vapers tend to drink less coffee, tea, and sodas. Many of us don’t even notice it. So, if your Previously-Addicted-to-Red-Bull Teenager is chugging a lot less of the red stuff, check his backpack for a vaping pen or box mod.

The vaping community may be a lot of things, but most of us do not advocate teenage vaping. The teen years should be filled with football games, school dances, and maybe a little smooching in the back of Dad’s Chevy. There is plenty of time to vape once they hit the legal age of eighteen (or twenty-one, if you live in Hawaii!). Vape responsibly.
